Privileges Committee

The Privileges Committee considers matters relating to the rights, powers, immunities, and protections of Parliament and its Members. Parliamentary privilege is important because it allows Members to perform their duties freely and responsibly, particularly when speaking in debate, asking questions, serving on committees, or raising matters on behalf of the people they represent.

The Committee may examine complaints or concerns involving possible breaches of privilege, contempt of Parliament, obstruction of Members in the performance of their duties, or conduct that may affect the authority and dignity of Parliament.

Its role is not only to protect individual Members, but also to protect the institution of Parliament itself. A strong system of parliamentary privilege ensures that the legislature can carry out its constitutional functions without improper interference.

Through its work, the Privileges Committee helps maintain respect for Parliament, safeguards the independence of Members, and supports the integrity of parliamentary proceedings.
