The Standing Orders Committee is responsible for reviewing and considering the rules that govern the proceedings of Parliament. These rules, known as the Standing Orders, guide how parliamentary business is conducted, including the order of proceedings, debates, questions, motions, amendments, voting, bills, committee work, and the conduct of Members during sittings.
The Committee plays an important role in ensuring that parliamentary procedures remain clear, fair, and effective. From time to time, it may review the Standing Orders and recommend changes to improve the management of parliamentary business or to reflect constitutional, administrative, or procedural developments.
Its work helps ensure that all Members understand the rules of debate and decision-making, and that the rights of both Government and Opposition Members are respected within the parliamentary process.
By keeping the Standing Orders under review, the Committee supports orderly debate, strengthens parliamentary discipline, and helps Parliament conduct its work in a manner that reflects democratic principles and good governance.
