The Public Accounts Committee is one of Parliament’s key financial oversight committees. Its main role is to examine how public money has been spent by government ministries, departments, statutory bodies, and other public entities. The Committee reviews public accounts, audit reports, and related financial information to determine whether funds approved by Parliament have been used properly, efficiently, and for the purposes intended.
The Committee’s work is closely connected to accountability in public finance. It may consider reports of the Auditor General, question public officials, examine evidence, and make recommendations aimed at improving financial management, internal controls, value for money, and compliance with approved budgets and laws.
The Public Accounts Committee helps ensure that public resources are managed responsibly and that public officers and institutions remain answerable for the use of funds entrusted to them.
By reviewing past expenditure and identifying areas for improvement, the Committee supports transparency, promotes good governance, and helps protect the financial interests of the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
